If an airline offers free membership, that is more attractive for customers. It is a simple yet effective method. At the time of the pandemic, people stopped traveling. It was a necessary precaution to stop the spread of the virus. However, airlines fell to rock bottom as their business dropped. 

The airline loyalty program was the only thing to give airlines revenue at that time. This program incorporates multiple partners and brands. So, when people buy something with an earned point, then airlines also get indirect benefits from it.
