Based on the manga by Koyoharu Gotouge The series has become one of Shonen Jump’s most successful series. With an anime adaptation by UFOTOTAL, the highest-grossing animation film to date in 2021 and the release of a console video game from a renowned game developer, it’s apparent that Demon Slayer mobile games is an enormous hit within the world of anime! All the stars align for Demon Slayer: The Hinokami Chroniclesto be a good time, but will the console version of this game surpass this incredibly high bar?

Demon Slayer Mobile Games: the Hinokami Chronicles retells the events of beginning with the Tanjiro Kamado, Unwavering Resolve Arc and down the Mugen Train arc. You control Tanjiro Kamado, who’s world is completely turned upside down when he discovers the entire family of his was murdered by an evil spirit. The sole survivor is his sister Nezuko and he finds out that while her life was spared, she was transformed into a demon. With newfound resolve, Tanjiro aspires to become the Demon Slayer to not only destroy the demon responsible for the murder of his family, but also seek out a way of turning Nezuko back to human form.
There’s no doubt that I’m the biggest enthusiast of Demon Slayer mobile games. This isn’t to say the plot isn’t good, because it’s not an original Shonen story with a hard-working main character and a goal to motivate them throughout the series. This isn’t a terrible effort, but I’ve seen similar stories many times before. But the reason that Demon Slayer mobile games stand out and the reason why I believe it’s the most popular of them all is its diverse character cast. Many of them are fun to watch regardless of Zenitsu experiencing severe panic attacks over the most mundane things, Inosuke being a parody of other shonen heroes that only think of fighting, Shinobu’s steadfast positive manner of speaking to the point where it’s quite disturbing and on and on! It also applies to the many adversaries Tanjiro must fight that often have a sympathetic backstory to explain why they behave in the manner they do.
Sadly, the weakest among them is our favorite, Tanjiro. I wasn’t averse to him, but he’s not all that fascinating. His distinctive traits include being a shrewd sense of smell, a tough head that’s frequently used to headbutt people, and… it’s that simple. As you might expect, his determination to never give up and is a kind heart However, these characteristics are a dime dozen for protagonists that belong to this genre. What makes him stand out is that his motivation is one of charity and he always thinks about people before himself, to the point of frequently being a sympathetic figure to the monsters they defeat. This is a great way to support him and his progress! If you’re wondering yes. Nezuko is absolutely adorable and, despite the fact she never speaks, she serves as the emotional foundation of the story. I wanted for her to return to her normal.
The question that is now posed is What do you think Demon Slayer: The Hinokami Chroniclesserve as a good way to experience an original story? It’s a bit complex. The major events of the story are covered in the game’s narrative. However, it is definitely an abridged version of the story. Although I do appreciate the fact that the game provides an option to play scenes that aren’t included in the game , using the concept of Memory Fragments. The reason for this kind of confusion is because some of them are becoming unlocked much later in the game, meaning scenes at the beginning of the story get locked off until you reach an unrelated time in the game’s narrative. This isn’t logical. Whatever, the game is an excellent way to learn an abbreviated version of the Demon Slayer mobile gamesstory!
Gameplay – Story Mode
Every arc of Demon Slayer Mobile Games: The Hinokami Chroniclesis separated into chapters. In order to be able to finish the game, players have to complete the entire eight chapters. It’s highly recommended to do this, as it’s the fastest method of unlocking all the characters and the stages that you’ll be using in the game’s versus mode. It’s unfortunate, then, it’s not consistent. When Tanjiro is on the hunt for his sister’s protection he’ll often find himself exploring unique environments, jumping across rooftops and sliding beneath vegetation. Sounds interesting, right? Unfortunately, these exploration segments are the weakest part of the campaign. The interactive elements I mentioned can only be performed in specific locations, which is a strange choice given the speed at which the characters you control will be in the cutscenes. The problem is that your character’s movements are at an extremely slow speed without any way to increase your movement speed. There are side quests you may tackle however to label them side quests is rather generous. They are all about communicating with specific individuals or dealing with objects all of which are marked by your map. This takes away any enjoyment from taking the time to explore every area.
The plot is usually slow as well, with you frequently having to watch a truckload of cutscenes along with those previously described exploration sections before you end up fighting any monsters. Thankfully, the times when you’re forced to unsheath your sword lead to great moments in the campaign! This is especially true of the amazing boss battles! All of these fights add distinct elements to make the fight more exciting by using your movement options to avoid massive attacks or fighting more than one boss simultaneously. These fights finish with an amazing interactivity cutscene that is based on CyberConnect2’s renowned quick-time events. There’s a little nitpick here however, as great as the final stages of boss battles are, I was disappointed they aren’t all quick-time events only require two or one button press, which is much unlike previous titles by CyberConnect2.
Beyond the main plot There are also special enemies to take on as you go through each chapter. While not mandatory, I found these enjoyable due to their difficulty and unique mechanics like one of them inflicting poison while attacking! It’s a good thing, as the majority of the single-player campaigns is simple. The chances of dying are very low due to attacks being regularly telegraphed and can be dodged when timed correctly. The game does thankfully get more challenging near its conclusion but this problem does not affect the game’s fantastic boss fights.

Gameplay – Combat System
The primary reason to play Demon Slayer Mobile Game Its Hinokami Chroniclesis being able to play as your favourite characters in a thrilling fighting game. I’m pleased to say that the combat system the game has is without doubt one of its strongest aspects! CyberConnect2 did not have a reputation for designing balanced combat systems and it took them a number of episodes in the Naruto Storm series to correct the flawed techniques they introduced for instance. All this experience was very successful, and the combat mechanics and mechanics in Demon Slayer: The Hinokami Chronicles are among the top games the studio has ever crafted!
The players choose two characters and one of them acts as a backup character to prolong combos or to protect the player from a combination. This is how long you can take on your opponent before they can not be damaged. If the gauge is green, which is generally when you successfully parry your opponent, you are able to perform a long combination. If your gauge’s color is red, which tends to occur when attacking an enemy from above it means that the time you are able to damage the opponent is significantly reduced. When all of this is put together it creates one of the most enjoyable combat games I’ve played over the several years! It’s quick to learn how to play, but there is enough depth to satisfy those who seek it. I can definitely think of playing Demon Slayer Mobile Games the Hinokami Chroniclesfor quite some time!
It’s not perfect though, as there are two significant issues that detract from the effectiveness of the system. One is the character roster: at the beginning, there are 12 characters that you can choose from, with 6 of them receiving an alternate version with more humorous ultimate combat. It’s not unusual for a game of fighting to be limited in its roster however, since certain characters have very similar special moves among them this leads me to believe that this was meant to include a larger initial roster, but it was forced to release now. This is backed up by the anime version to Demon Slayer Mobile Games which is set to begin its second season a week before the game’s release. However, we’ve confirmed of the fact that players will receive six DLC characters free of charge and this means that the lack of characters won’t be a problem for much time.
The other problem is more serious, one that could impact the game’s gameplay if not fixed. The PlayStation 4 version I’ve experienced and it has been regularly shared by numerous gamers that there is noticeable delays in inputs when entering moves during the game. It’s not only limited to online play, but this is also the case when playing games locally. It means that the player’s reaction time is significantly restricted and in a sport that demands precise timing to parry moves, how such a problem got past testing is baffling! Although reports of this issue being present in different games such as PlayStation 5 and PC PlayStation 5 and PC are not compatible, it’s believed that the current version of the hardware doesn’t feature this delay in input. It is our only hope that this issue of delay will be fixed in PlayStation 4 version. PlayStation 4 version, although that’s not 100% certain.
Gameplay – Online
Being someone who’s spent a number of years playing games on CyberConnect2 online I’m familiar with how they work, but the results aren’t always what you expect. Since their inception they’ve been constantly improving the online options available to players, like creating lobbies and tournaments, and a spectator mode. But when Naruto Shippuden: Ultimate Ninja Storm 4 was released in 2016, many of the options for players were not there. It was impossible to create lobbies that could accommodate more than four persons and spectating matches could no anymore be used. This was rectified in the game’s “Road to Boruto” expansion one year later You’d think the studio had learned their lesson and would not be compromising on online play options for their future games, wouldn’t you? But… we’ll just suppose they’ve found an avenue to make online play even more restrictive!
There are only two ways to play online: ranked matches that demonstrate your dominance on its ranking system, and custom matches, which allows you to change options and invite a friend to play with… That’s it. I’ve had the pleasure of meeting many wonderful people when playing online games from CyberConnect2 because of their earlier fighting game titles having online lobbies and spectating options. With the removal of these features and offering us the basic options that the community of Demon Slayer Mobile Games: and the Hinokami Chroniclesis really going to suffer in the long term! As an example, there’ll be no way to easily organize tournaments online which ultimately will hurt the potential competitive aspect of the game. Similar to the problem with input delay on PlayStation 4, we can only hope these options will be added to the game in the line.
Regarding the input delay issue again, let’s talk about the game’s netcode. The game is based on a delay netcode, which has caused quite a few combat game enthusiasts to sigh in unison. In essence, based on the connection to each opponent’s connection, it’s possible to have a decent battle or a game that has an enormous delay in input. When you add in the game’s current problem with input delay on the PlayStation 4 version, you could suffer an absurd amount of input delay when fighting online! I’ve had many online matches against people from my region and, while I grew used with it over time, all will be able to play with this.

If there’s one area that CyberConnect2 always impresses is the way they present their games, and Demon Slayer Mobile Games: The Hinokami Chroniclesis no exception. The game is simply stunning! Cel shaders have changed significantly in the past two decades and some examples of the most successful use of this style blurred the lines between 2D as well as 3D animated. I often had to pick up my jaw from the ground by the way the characters and shots were reconstructed from the anime adaptation and in some instances the game has surpassed it! If you think about it, CyberConnect2’s efforts are compared against ufotable’s, one of the most acclaimed animation studios in the industry of anime, it speaks for itself! I frequently had to keep in mind that this wasn’t an 2D animated game because of how the anime’s style changed to a 3-dimensional space! The game isn’t perfect, however: while the environments you’ll explore in the story mode are all unique and packed with detail however, I saw some moments of texture popping up. It’s a minor issue when you consider how amazing the game looks in motion!
Surprisinglyenough, the loading times were quite respectable especially on PlayStation 4. The game took between 10 and 15 minutes, regardless of whether it was a story mode cutscene or a multiplayer match therefore, kudos to the performance improvement on older platforms! The game runs at 30 frames per second. Although some may be offended at this, particularly since it being a fighting game, I think that it added a cinematic feeling and made it more in line with the original source material!
The music is also a great feature! In addition to the fact that the game utilize some of the pieces from the cult anime soundtrack and the original music compositions are perfectly in line with the sound and tone. I never got tired of hearing the same battle soundtrack while playing with my friends online for over 20 matches in a row! In a rare move to have a licensed anime title, the game also received the dual audio track, which includes each of English and Japanese voice actors available straight out of the box. While I first watched the anime in its original Japanese language however, the English voice cast does well as well, featuring Bryce Papenbrook as Inosuke being an absolute highlight for me! It couldn’t have been easy to capture the character’s chaos but I think Byrce was absolutely perfect in his performance! However, I must discuss Zach Aguilar’s portrayal in the series’ protagonist, Tanjiro. Although he does an acceptable job in the majority of the time but, when he needed to shout or display intense emotions, such as anger or crying but the delivery and tone do not reflect the rest of his character. It got to the point that the moment these events occurred, he almost sounded like the character he played was a distinct character. This was extremely distracting!
It’s fair to say that I’m with you. I’m between two worlds in a difficult spot in the case of Demon Slayer: The Hinokami Chronicles. This is a 3-D fighting game from one of my favorite game companies with a huge anime franchise to back it. I was sold from the beginning of its announcement in March of 2020! The fact it was published with one of the favourite games companies SEGA, didn’t hurt any! I’ll admitthat I had quite an experience playing the game, even though I’m not the most enthusiastic player of Demon Slayer mobile games when compared with Naruto however, there are some inexcusable problems which prevent it from the top of the line. There is no online option and the slow input speed as well as the slow-paced narrative deter me from making a positive recommendation, however I am aware more than anyone that there’s a market out there for a game that is similar to this.
